Journalism and storytelling is adapting new ways of technology

So what do you understand by the meaning of #journalist or #journalism. To my understanding a Journalist is a person who brings in stories that are happening in the society. The stories can be good or bad depending upon situation and time. Where as journalism means a channel or structured network that helps to bring out the real news in a more organized way.

Now looking at the current past practice and what is happening how do you feel where journalists and journalism is going?

I think no where I mean to say most of the news published by reputed publications have been questioned for relevance and there has been issues and concern about how and what they have been publishing. I guess even big news papers Kantipur Publication has been marked with the controversy of Anju Baniya to  Ashish Luitel which certainly raises the credibility and accountability towards public. Journalism practice  in Nepal is degrading with no role models and icons, its falling prey to big names where news making process is loosing its essence and news makers are fantasized as celebs.

Its a part of the evolution process but with time and modern values the meaning and definition of journalist and journalism is also changing. The public these days do not accept reality that easy they inquire and they validate that is the reason why even at public sector people are very active in social media and investigation process. People want reliable sources and  they do cross check the information. It is very funny to say even for natural events occurring, one of my journalist friend took reference from social networking site indicating how people were feeling at that moment of time.

Journalism or journalist is a prized profession where the state has granted  special rights and responsibility towards this field. They practice and exercise few specific rights which are specially granted to them recognizing their role and responsibility towards society.

No matter what recognition are there but the credibility of Nepali journalists are degrading. May be its because of lack of monitoring or may be due to lack of sense of morale it is not good.

From a watcher perspective I have been observing the industry from past 20 years. I have seen the ups and downs of this field.  Just like the option of life you will also find various option of being a journalist optimistic, pessimist and realist. People are also adapting various ways and means in understanding and interpreting journalism in their own way where this field has changed radically .

In today's context when you talk about commercial news and main stream journalism it generally means something bad that sells as the standard of true journalism has gone down. Journalists have become sales men selling news hiding behind the prospect of business. More often the real journalist who are driven by morale and ethic are either sidelined or they  have to face the path of power, humiliation and manipulation.

Even if you look at the practice any where else  power, money and network has always driven the path of news making. More or less it would be too rude to say journalism of today is a proactive form of  business and news that are more concerned about opportunities than real storytelling process.

Having said that these group of publications have been infiltrated by so called federation and association who were established for the protection and monitoring the values of journalism but on the contrary they have moved away from their objective in creating a better opportunity for themselves. For instance these days in Nepal the Federation of Nepalese Journalist is more politically associated with various parties than the news making elements. Their appointment and even their election is majorly affected by the ruling government.

I think this is a smaller perspective of what is happening especially in Asia pacific but is a more concerning thing where journalism is derailing from its true meaning. Apart from that the politics and favoritism that goes on is something that needs no voice.  The trues face of journalism is dying in mist of lack of right practice.

However, the new platform of citizen journalism and social media has given people a new inspiration to express their opinions and views of what they want and feel. I am surprised that the coming up generation of bloggers, activists, citizen Journalist and  normal people are more active about social issues.

If you want to know the current status of Nepal's politics then I do not flip over the newspapers as if you look at the various of newspapers they have their own version. Even with fact, figure and events happening things are reported differently. One can argue about the various perspective and mindset but how can fixed things like fact, figures and events happening be differently reported.  In  one or the other ways they are influenced by various  factors in their new making process. Its a sad and bad example but the truth about what is happening and the so called federation and association are supporting and nurturing this.  I think its better to search the tweet or use a has tag to know what is a happening  around.

So tell me if i am crossing the line in redefining the meaning of journalism or may be i am getting influence by social media. no matter I think journalism/ storytelling / news making  all these are process of   reality that cannot be ignored. it needs a certain credibility from the writers side as well as from the readers side to know what is truth and what is not .

Lastly I would say I would not trust a journalist of Nepal but i would trust a social media has tag where i can see and read reality.

Kantipur Publication Neglects the road infront

Kantipur Publication, Subidhanagar  is one of apex journalism organization of Nepal. It practices storytelling
and bringing the truth through different form of paper, radio and Television channel. It writes about the pro and cons of society but from years, every time it rains the road in-front of them becomes slippery and hundreds of people  have slipped in-front.

Recently the road was dug up during the road expansion campaign and has further worsen the scenario putting a question in the late working modality of the road department.

Do they care I don't think so?  Nobody cares, the publication seems to highlight and voice issues of concern where as it refuses to see the road in-front is degrading and needs serious attention. what can we expect from a pristine organization like such. Is it my mistake to expect such a minor thing from the Kantipur Publication?

Wiki defines Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as  corporate conscience, corporate citizenship, social performance, or sustainable responsible business/ Responsible Business. It  is a form of corporate self-regulation integrated into a business model.

Today I became a Victim and slipped. I don't know whom to blame the government that fails to realize public safety to which I bloody pay my hard earned money as tax  for public welfare  or the publication that stands tall in bringing the truth of the society but neglects the road in front.

What kind of society are we moving to ....................................

Rayznews writes, " If Kantipur publication being the apex news agency cannot voice a minor issue like this then its hard to imagine how it can voice the  truth to the public,"

A letter to the Editor

Dear all,

I'm a normal Nepali, a Social activist and writer/reporter. Today I encountered a news which completely made me re-think where our country’s journalism is moving. I believe kantipur being the foremost and pioneering has more responsibility in its sustainability than others where it’s losing its hope. It use to be people's voice and use to lead peoples aspirations in words of change but I guess moving on with commercialism, it has lost its vitality and core values . Previously Kantipur use to be known for its News validity and precision but these days Kantipur is known for its reporters and how they put up their stories. It has become a high reporters/ writers based Newspaper which certainly looks into personal writers opinions rather than any research or reality. This mail basically encompasses my feeling toward a journalist's role and his practices. This mail is regarding Aashish Luitel's article published in the Kantipur daily dated July 27, 2011 about facebook activism which is attached with this mail. I believe everyone has their opinion and we should respect them at all times. PRESS FREEDOM is not a question at any times, but when it deals with social issues even writers and reporters have to be careful about the impacts and roles. A writer in view of his publication’s popularity cannot go about writing anything to hurt people sentiment without facts and information. It is his priority to understand and portray the diplomacy of the information to its use and validity. His persistence in being non bias towards the issue should be his priority. The way Mr Luitel portrays his opinion towards such an important issue seems very irrelevant and questionable. I believe questioning other integrity and giving people your own personal facebook information ( Facebook profile address) certainly points his intentions toward the larger picture of his cheap popularity stunt. If that is the case then I'm sorry to say this but people would lose credibility over the news and news making process.

I would just like to ask the editors these questions where are we moving? Is this journalism that you guys want to pass on to the coming generation? Are moving on the right track ?Manipulation, media power play, Corruption and cheap popularity stunts is this morally acceptable…………… I believe with great power, comes great responsibilities which is being missed by Mr. Luitel. I doubt his credibility and I challenge his skepticism of his definition in regards to journalism. I say this is yellow journalism not press freedom to write against a social movement that too on the basis of rumors with no proofs is a question of integrity. I believe being a writer/ reporter from a prestigious publication and writing something on a social issue that too without any research based on rumors and slashing an image of a movement created and dedicated for the people is a question that points fingers his and your integrity not ours. I would just like to ask the editorial team how could they have approve such a personal opinionated piece that slashes public sentiment. The facebook movement has not only been an eyes opener to thousands of Nepali facebook users but it has brought into light the true spirit of patriotism. Just think where wore we moving a year back. Young people use to say, I hate politics, politics is shit and its nonsense. From this movement at least we have got the feeling of My Country my responsibility, Young people are at least talking and showing their interest that's credibility sir. We know we might bring not bring an instant change but we know we are satisfied at least we are changing the mentality of youth. We are very sure that It’s our country, and we made it garbage and we are trying to clean it so please do join in to know the reality. "Kantipur Publication specially the Kantipur use to be one of the best news publication in Nepal but its credibility is degrading not due to competition but due to its weak editorial Team who don't even cross verify its reporters stories. I guess the Writers and Reporters are more important than the quality of news & its impact ...."MY COUNTRY MY RESPONSIBILITY, MY NEPAL MY PRIDE
